Joey Bukai, psychiatric nurse practitioner and therapist

Your Partner in Mental Wellness

Hi! I'm a nurse practitioner in psychiatry seeing clients remotely in New York. I specialize in helping clients better manage anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues, and low self-esteem through medication management and psychotherapy.

If you've felt overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in navigating work, relationships, or your path in life, then you know it can be hard to figure out where to start to make positive change. I focus on helping clients identify how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all interconnected, so they can begin taking control of their lives and accomplish their goals.

I provide feedback, support, and guidance that help clients explore their inner worlds and better understand how to improve their sense of well-being.

My Approach to Care

1

Collaborative Partnership

I believe that nurturing one's mental health is a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and exploration. In our work together, my goal is to help you better understand your emotions, learn more about your past, and develop ways to pursue your goals — including prescribing medications if we agree that could be helpful to you.

2

Holistic Understanding

I like to explore the beliefs you may hold about yourself and the world (including spiritual beliefs), as well as more existential questions such as how you make meaning of your life experiences. Treatment is most effective when it's consistent and intentional, so I encourage clients to attend weekly sessions.

3

Safe & Open Space

Progress happens when we put in the effort together both in and outside of our sessions. I welcome your input on the therapeutic relationship — whether good or seemingly bad — since I believe having a good relationship makes therapy work. Here, you won't be judged for feeling frustrated or upset. This is your space to speak openly and be treated with compassion.

How We'll Work Together

Getting Started

My approach starts with getting to know what your goals are for treatment and how your past experiences relate to your current struggles. This process can take anywhere from 1-4 sessions. Afterwards, I will offer you some first impressions and we will collaborate on a plan to work towards your goals.

Understanding Patterns

I generally start with trying to explore how you learned how to relate to yourself and others, along with your history of mental health symptoms, so we can identify patterns that you've developed over the course of your life. Seeing these patterns allows you to begin the work of changing them to help you feel better and more confident.

Ongoing Collaboration

In order for treatment to work best, it requires a commitment of time, money, and energy, so you are encouraged to offer feedback to me to get the best possible experience. If you have questions about my procedures or way of practicing, please ask them and we can engage in collaborative conversation. If you still don't feel we are a good fit, I'll help you find someone who might be better suited to your needs.

About the Practice

I'm a dual-licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) in private practice in New York City. What makes my practice unique is that I provide both psychotherapy and medication management — so you get integrated care from one provider instead of coordinating between a separate therapist and psychiatrist.

I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, interpersonal difficulties, and low self-esteem. My treatment approaches include psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapy, existential psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychiatric medication management, supplement consultation, and medication tapering support.

Both in-network insurance and private pay options are available. Accepted insurance plans include UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, Oscar, Aetna, Carelon, Anthem, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Meritain. For self-pay clients, initial psychiatric evaluations are $250, with follow-up sessions ranging from $125 to $225 depending on session type and length. Superbills are provided for out-of-network reimbursement.

All appointments are available via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth throughout New York State. I'm currently accepting new clients, with initial consultations typically available within 1-2 weeks.
